Philippine Airlines (PAL) to soon serve flights from Zamboanga to Kota Kinabalu and back starting March 31.
This has been confirmed by Sabah's Deputy Chief Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Environment, Christina Liew. "This is good for the business community, trading, fraternity, and leisure travelers," Liew said. During the late 90s, there were flights between Zamboanga and Kota Kinabalu, and it was one of the key routes for the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). Unfortunately, it didn't last long and by the early 2000s, flights from Zamboanga to Kota Kinabalu were discontinued. A year ago, PAL had made a courtesy call with Christina Liew as they planned to re-open the Zamboanga - Kota Kinabalu flights. "I've been looking forward to this inaugural Philippine Airlines' flight since the proposal was made last year. The move is timely as it ties in well with Visit Malaysia Year 2020" Flights will be trice a week, every Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The flight will take an hour and 45 minutes, and PAL will be using their Bombardier Q400NG, which can carry at least 80 passengers. A flight from Zamboanga to Kota Kinabalu will depart by 8:00 AM, while a return flight from Kota Kinabalu to Zamboanga is at 10:45 AM. "On its inaugural flight, we shall welcome the plane with a water salute and upon arrival the passengers shall be welcomed with a traditional dance number by our cultural dance troupe," Liew added.
